    The NYC Dept. of Buildings is requiring that all Concrete Inspectors working in NYC must have the CCSI certification or a P.E. license.

     

    For Associate Concrete Construction Special Inspector: ACI will grant certification to those applicants who meet the Field Technician prerequisite and pass both written examinations. Individuals with Associate certification can upgrade to full Inspector status upon submittal and approval of sufficient education/work experience. 


    A Concrete Construction Special Inspector is a person qualified to inspect and record the results of concrete construction inspection based on codes and job specifications. The program covers inspection during pre-placement, placement, and post-placement operations. An Associate Concrete Construction Special Inspector is a person who is knowledgeable about inspection procedures for concrete construction, including pre-placement, placement, and post-placement operations; but does not have the experience required to qualify as an ACI Concrete Construction Special Inspector


    Recertification is necessary every five (5) years, and requires successful completion of the written examinations.

    The three-hour written inspection examination is "open book" and consists of approximately 80 multiple choice questions. The one-hour plans reading examination consists of approximately 20 questions and is designed to test the examinee's ability to read and understand engineering drawings. The minimum passing grade for each examination is 70%.

    A certified Adhesive Anchor Installation Inspector is an individual who has demonstrated the knowledge required to properly inspect the installation of adhesive anchors in concrete. The Inspector must understand the responsibilities and qualification requirements of the Installer, inspection requirements as cited in the documents governing the construction of the project, and the process governing the qualification of anchor systems.

    Scope and Knowledge: 

    This program requires knowledge of adhesive anchor installation including:

    §  Understanding the Special Inspector’s role on the jobsite

    §  Knowledge of the difference between periodic and continuous inspection and under what conditions each is required

    §  Understanding jobsite conditions relevant for correct selection of installation procedures in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions (e.g. concrete age, wetness, hole drilling method used, possible embedded obstructions, and air and concrete temperature)

    §  Proper location of anchors (spacing, edge distance, and member thickness)

    §  Understanding the manufacturer’s instructions (pictograms, text) and the proper procedures, sequence, and tools to clean the hole

    §  Importance of proper selection and assembly of the injection equipment

    §  Importance of injection of adhesive into holes at various orientations to the proper depth using proper technique and equipment to minimizes air voids

    §  Recognition of time limits for installation and positioning of anchor element (i.e., gel time) depending on type of adhesive, ambient conditions, and size/depth of anchor hole

    §  Recognition of warning signs of potential deviation from the construction documents and the manufacturer printed installation instructions

    §  Knowledge of inspection requirements and the documents in which they are cited

    §  Knowledge of proof loading requirements


    Job Task Analysis (JTA) for ACI Adhesive Anchor Installation Inspector Certification

    Certification Requirements: 

    ACI will grant certification only to those applicants who attain passing grades on the ACI written examinations. 

    Attend an adhesive anchor installation practice session, which must include the vertical down, and vertical up installations utilizing both system types (retaining cap and piston plug). These sessions are available through ACI Certification Sponsoring Groups. 

    The forty-five-minute installation examination is closed-book and consists of approximately 45 multiple-choice questions. To pass the installation examination the examinee must attain a minimum score of 74%. 

    The seventy-five-minute inspection examination is open-book and consists of approximately 55 multiple choice questions. To pass the installation examination the examinee must attain a minimum score of 70%.

    The Concrete Industry Board is conducting an ACI Concrete Laboratory Testing Technician, Grade II certification course. This is a four day course held on April 27th, May 4th and 8th. The written and performance testing is held on the last day, May 18th.


    This program is intended to train concrete technicians to select proportions for concrete mix designs, evaluate concrete test results using statistical methods, perform the flexural strength test and nine other test methods not covered by the Laboratory Grade 1 certification program. This course is structured to provide laboratory staff the technical knowledge to be better able to develop and review mix designs and evaluate test results.
